Miro 2.0

February 12th, 2009

I got an email from the miro team today saying that miro v. 2.0 has been released and that I should download it. Upon visiting the link the email provided to download, the web page conveniently recognized my operating system (a variant of Ubuntu that I mentioned in my earlier post) and had a really big download button. It was hard to miss. I clicked on it and was very impressed when it brought me to a page with a list of repositories I should add. I chose the one for my laptop (Ubuntu Hardy) and copied into synaptic. I reloaded synaptic and installed miro with no problems whatsoever. The downside is if you don’t have Ubuntu the install is probably much more tedious (it was when I tried to install an earlier version to a different computer a long time ago, at least).

Miro is now my default application to play videos with (I have serious issues with VLC and mplayer) and have subscribed to 3 or 4 video feeds already. This application is extraordinarily innovative and I doubt I shall ever stop using it. Of course, if I do because of fault of Miro’s I shall probably blog about it. If I feel like it. Miro can be found at getmiro.

Beds Are Burning

February 8th, 2009

…literally. Here is a video I took walking through my house a few days after the fire:

…OK, apparently I don’t have enough space on my server to post my video. There are two solutions to this problem.

1) You can help me fund my website by going to asmallorange.com and signing up for web hosting using one of my super-deal coupons I made just for you: $5 off with coupon code ‘enterthepig’ or 15% off with coupon code ‘enterthepig-15′.

2) I can just upload my videos to YouTube or wherever and embed them into my page. However, I’m lazy and don’t feel like setting up an account with YouTube or MetaCity or anywhere. I wonder if there is anywhere that supports the OGG Theora file format for their video uploads. Hmm…

Anyway, feel free to get web hosting and use my code (it goes towards my hosting plan) and in the meantime I will probably get an account at one of them places and embed my video into a future post. note: I originally was going to post this on the 25th of last month, but apparently that didn’t happen. ;)

From My Acer Aspire One… (and a fire)

January 19th, 2009

Well, my umpc arrived on my doorstep a few days ago. The computer itself I love. The keyboard isn’t too small — and the keys are in logical positions, not strewn about awkwardly like in some laptops. The screen’s resolution is magnificent. There is no Windows key, no Windows sticker, and no Windows operating system. The GNU/Linux distribution it came with, however, is kind of a joke. It is Linpus Linux Lite and based off of an old Fedora distribution. But it is extraordinarily difficult to install almost anything because of the custom crap that “Linpus” put on it. It mimics Windows too closely, even has a little anti-user thing called “Live Update” (now where have we heard that before?). I have customized as much I could, but I am giving up on this Linpus devil and installing Linux4One, an Italian operating system based on Ubuntu (not my favourite distro but forgivable) and specifically for the Aspire One. It is currently downloading as we speak.

On another note, there was a fire at my house a day or so go as well. It wasn’t a terrible fire, but a fire nonetheless. It was in one of the bedrooms (the one right next to mine :S). A restoration people hired by our insurance company have now taken over and we are live elsewhere for the time being.

Linux4One is now installed on my computer — it is phenominally better than Linpus. After booting up the liveUSB I created the UI wasn’t quite what the screenshots looked like and the WiFi wasn’t recognized. So I looked up the problem on some forum somewhere and apparently it goes away after installation to the hard drive. So I tried it. And it worked. Everything works (so far as I can tell) except for the WiFi LED. However, this is scheduled to be a fix for the next release of Linux4One so I am not being critical. Here is a screenshot of me writing this:

A New Laptop

January 9th, 2009

I ordered a few days ago an Acer Aspire One netbook from pcconnection.com. I ordered the GNU/Linux version with an 8gb SSD hard drive and 1gb of RAM. I have several reasons for choosing this particular laptop. I wanted a netbook because of its incredible ultraportability and it’s typical implementation of a GNU/Linux distribution. Along with the second one I did not want a computer with a Windows key on it. My laptop needed to be very cheap as well. As it turns out, I only spent $279 on mine. It is expected to arrive on Monday, so expect an overview sometime next week.

What do they have to do to lose your vote?

October 29th, 2008

I was directed in an email today to look at an article (http://www.votenader.org/blog/2008/10/29/what-do-they-have-to-do/) pointing out why a vote for Barak Obama isn’t going to bring about the change he always talks about. The entry was written by vice-presidential candidate Matt Gonzalez, running mate of Ralph Nader. I highly recommend everyone who is planning on voting for Sen. Obama to read this article, and take it seriously, with the exception of if your mind is set on voting for Barak Obama so solidly and nothing could ever change your mind, you would be wasting your time by reading it because you aren’t looking for the truth – you just want to vote for Obama. But for those of you who want to know the case against this so-called advocate of change (and not just the case for him), this should be your starting point.

This country needs CHANGE. Real change, not Obama-change. We need political reform. We need to open the debates. We need to get out of Iraq. We need to resolve the Israel-Palenstine issue. We need to invest in SOLAR energy — not “clean coal” that isn’t clean and “safe nuclear” that isn’t safe. We need to REALLY cut government spending and not just pretend to do that like the big-O and big-MC. We need to crack down on corporate crime — unlike Obama and McCain who get paid billions of dollars by them. We need to reverse the deregulation from Clinton and Bush.

I went to Salt Lake today (where I am right now) to pick up a whole bunch of Nader/Gonzalez campaign merchandise from their office. It was well worth the missed school. I have lawn signs, buttons, stickers, flyers, etc., and I can’t wait to redistribute them in Cache Valley/Logan. If you are supporter of the Nader/Gonzalez campaign or know someone who is that’s in my area please let me know so I can give you some cool stuff! Anyway, I need to leave SLC and head back home right about now. So, please comment on this my first ever blog entry on the new and improved enterthepig.com. Cheers.
